A major automotive manufacturer of transmissions and transfer cases needed
a custom shift detent mechanism for a smooth shift engagement for their new
system.
Our customer’s engineering team contacted Kilian early in the development
process and began working closely with their design engineering
counterparts at Kilian. For this new and challenging application,
"catalog" detents were not an option. The design evolved over a number of
prototype iterations, morphing from a soft low carbon material housing with
no grease, to a heat treated high carbon material housing that was greased
in the final assembly.
Throughout the entire development process, Kilian engineers performed much
of the testing and supported the customer with critical data that
professionally guided the decision making process.
The final design resulted in a value added shift detent that performed with
excellent results. The new material selection satisfied the applications
press fit and the smooth rolling performance exceeded expectations.
Kilian is the global custom engineered leader in value added solutions for
many of the world’s largest automotive and industrial OEM’s.

Kilian was working with a global manufacturer of excavating equipment who
was having quality and delivery problems with their existing supplier.
During installation, the tensioner pulley bearing was being damaged because
the current design made it difficult to properly fixture the bearing to
avoid a bearing’s biggest nightmare—brinelling. This occurs when a load
is applied to an improperly supported bearing. The rolling elements,
(balls) create "dents" into the raceways. These dents result in noise when
the bearing is rotated—imagine your car driving down a road full of
potholes. (After a hard winter in Syracuse, this isn’t very hard to
imagine.)
To make matters even more difficult, the customer also had to assemble some
spacers and a stud in order to install the bearing into the system.
For nearly 100 years, Kilian has specialized in creating innovative
solutions to these types of problems. Solutions that improve quality and
save money by increasing the value in the design. In this case, Kilian
created a unitized design that eliminated the need to buy and assemble
other components and made installation a "no brainer," eliminating scrap
due to brinnelling.
Couple this engineering excellence with our "best in class" customer
service and on time delivery and everybody wins!

Kilian worked with a global automotive producer of engine and drivetrain systems to help develop a unique, high volume assembly for a new, "cutting-edge" transmission. Although the new assembly was not a bearing, our customer quickly saw that Kilian possessed the core expertise to take on this extremely challenging project. Combining Kilian’s stength in engineering development, precision machining, molding, assembly, quality systems, testing and project management, Kilian was able to achieve the demanding quality and program targets to successfully launch the program.
Kilian knows bearings, but we can also provide this same kind of support for other "non-bearing" projects that take advantage of our wide variety of engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Call us today and challenge us with your next high volume project!

Our customer needed a bearing assembly that would effectively control the movement of their track lighting system used in the production of greenhouses.
The Kilian team assessed and analyzed exactly how this new bearing design should be applied as well as the environmental factors that would affect the bearing.
Kilian came up with a light weight, durable plastic pulley bearing that would be able to handle the movement of the track lighting system and accept the heat and humidity. Kilian conducted some in house testing on numerous designs before proposing a recommended solution.
Prototypes were supplied to the customer for testing and validation which proved to be successful. Our customer was extremely pleased with Kilian’s engineering innovation and support.

Recently Kilian worked with an OEM company that had been purchasing expensive bearings for their transmission drive—bearings that did not meet their needs or suit their drive unit.
During visits and extensive communication, the Kilian team engineered a significant cost effective custom bearing design. This new bearing incorporated three stamped components with installed rollers. This fresh and money saving thrust bearing surpassed the customer’s expectations. Additionally, this innovative design enhanced the quality and performance that Kilian customers have come to expect.

Kilian continues to be on the cutting edge by assisting customers and going above and beyond expectations.
A high pressure cleaning machine manufacturer submitted a request to the Kilian team. This manufacturer needed a custom bearing. This bearing had to handle a guide hose reel. The custom bearing had to allow the unit to hold, retract and dispense the hose for the cleaning machine. This needed to be done accurately to avoid tangling and also provide a safe operating environment for the user.
The customer had also expressed an interest to be able to re-lubricate the sealed bearing in its position within the machine. The talented Kilian team engineered a bearing that could be re-lubricated without removing or dis assembling the hose reel. The ability to re-lubricate the bearing along with the anti-corrosive coating extends the service life of the bearing.
Once again, Kilian strives to maintain that cutting edge in a serious manner. Kilian continues to work with the customer to get new business and to strengthen relationships.

Custom bearing for manufacturer of movable glass and wall partitions for home and business
The manufacturer contacted Kilian and asked the Kilian team to come up with a solution to their problem. The issue was the current moving mechanism was a solid unit creating excessive heavy friction when opening and closing the movable walls. Working together with the customer, including visits to the customer’s plant, the Kilian team was able to experience first hand the challenge that needed to be resolved. Kilian designed a unique stainless steel custom solution. It was prototyped and submitted in just a few weeks time. The development stages were analyzed and further improvements were made. A final prototype was submitted and highly approved for production.
