Kilian helped a major construction equipment manufacturer reduce excessive field service calls by designing a bearing that corrected a serious performance issue in their mini-excavators. A major U.S. construction equipment manufacturer had a foot pedal assembly on a mini excavator that was continually failing. Located on the floor of the cab, the foot pedal is used to help maneuver the machine. The lever featured a bushing inside the casting with two O-rings that were continually wearing down. Excessive clearance in the assembly was causing the lever to slip, resulting in loss of vehicle control for equipment operators. This was creating a huge warranty issue as the manufacturer was spending a great deal of time in the field replacing the bushing system. The manufacturer called Kilian to help them find a solution. Kilian engineers determined that the company needed a customized bearing solution, instead of the O-ring design they were using. Using precision bearing and casting sources developed over many years, Kilian designed a precision bearing assembly that incorporated an internal stud in the casting. The new design minimized play in the system and resulted in a single, complete assembly rather than eight different components, saving costs and minimizing inventory for the manufacturer.
